A central Italian climate is typically mild offering diverse conditions and opportunities to holiday all throughout the year. Tuscany, with the Apennines and the Tyrrhenian Sea, ensures pleasing temperatures and relatively little rainfall. There are welcome variations depending on when and which area you decide to visit, be it sea, hilly hinterlands or mountain ranges. The lowlands along the west coast along with the valleys have the warmest Mediterranean climes, differing from that of the snow-capped Apennine mountains in the north. March, April and May welcome an early springtime, characterised by variable weather, very mild temperatures and occasional showers. It’s normal to experience sunny days, above 20 degrees Celsius (68 F), ideal for all outdoor activities with longer and warmer daylight hours. The Tuscan summer is noted for its prolonged periods of atmospheric stability where temperatures are on average 30 degrees Celsius during June, July and August. September’s stable weather leads in autumn where temperatures fall to 25 degrees Celsius, October is very mild, November sees more rainfall when 10-12 degrees Celsius become the norm. Winter, is a mild affair for most months, getting colder in late December and January; there is occasionally drizzle or rain and snowfall have been a regular visitor in recent years.

Every day is special and unique, considering you will be exploring locations and covering subjects that you have selected, receiving individual tuition or in small groups of maximum four students. You’ll be creating interesting images from numerous different photographic genres, from the best vantage points, at the right moment in the finest light.

Daily schedule outline Before dawn we’ll be setting off, aiming to capture images as dawns first light starts burning through the misty troughs in Tuscany’s valley (you may prefer to sleep in), returning to our villa or farmhouse for breakfast and a shower. If we are distant from our accommodation, then a hearty breakfast will be taken in the vicinity of that location or on the way to another. We download our images, freeing up your memory cards before heading out to another location. Maybe its city street scenes and architecture in Florence or Siena. Or portraits in Montepulciano where it is still possible to capture more images of Tuscany’s ever-present artisans, ‘artigiani’. Lunch time follows and is taken either on the road or at our base, with distance being the key factor. When lunch is taken on the fly then we will probably be location scouting or finding the right areas, subjects and scenes to create interesting images, during these harsh daylight hours. We will arrive and set up in our final location, ready, waiting and observing shadows grow, finally capturing the most spectacular array of images from the day’s glorious sunset. When lunch is enjoyed at our base, time is dedicated to post-production or masterclass sessions. You may also want to take advantage of a brief nap or a dip in the pool or relaxed photo discussions. After we prepare and set off again for the day’s final location before feasting on various flavours from fine Tuscan menus, at our villa or close to the final location of the day.

Thankfully inclement weather days in Tuscany are rare they do however present the occasion to concentrate on post-production or if space is available studio-based sessions, exploring the local area or even braving the elements to capture that incredible post-storm environment. You have the opportunity to work in or choose from hand selected locations in each of the ten provinces throughout Tuscany. Some regions like Siena provide more opportunities than others, whether it be the distance from our base or just the way that history unfolded, and the land lies.

Come as you are or bring a friend, a family member or your partner but above all come with an open-minded approach. On all or photography adventures assistance is available to book any available activities that non-participating partners may appreciate.
